EyeStill in Claude: read a book in the chat, and ask about it as you go
Open an article, a classic novel or Claude's own answer in a speed reader right inside the conversation. Pause anywhere, and Claude knows exactly which sentence you stopped on.
What it is
EyeStill shows text one word at a time at a single point of focus, on a gently turning drum: the word you're reading in the middle, the next few to the right, the last few fading to the left. Your eyes stay still instead of running along lines. Until now that lived in our web reader and in the Chrome extension. Now it also runs inside Claude, as an interactive app in the chat.
Three ways in
A link
"Read https://paulgraham.com/greatwork.html with EyeStill." The reader fetches the page, keeps the article and drops the menus, footnotes and reference lists, and opens it in the chat.
A book
"Open Moby-Dick in EyeStill from chapter 30." Public-domain books come from Project Gutenberg's mirrors. A long novel loads part by part as you read, so even The Brothers Karamazov — 350,000 words — opens at once. Ask for a chapter, and it opens on that chapter's heading.
An answer
"Explain how vaccines train the immune system, in EyeStill." Claude writes its answer straight into the reader instead of the chat, and the words start moving while the answer is still being written. Ask once, and later answers in that conversation can go to the reader too.
Read with someone who knows where you are
This is the part a plain speed reader can't do. While you read, the reader tells Claude where you are: the word number, the sentence on screen and the passage around it. It does this when you pause, when you jump, at the end, and every 45 seconds while you read — never the whole book, only what a question needs.
- Explain this part — pause on a difficult sentence and Claude explains it, quoting the words it means.
- Recap so far — a short summary of what you've read up to this point.
- Discuss and Quiz me — at the end, talk the ideas through, or answer three short questions one at a time to check you've got it.
- Continue later — say "go on where I stopped" and Claude reopens the text at that very word.
The buttons are under the reader when you pause; you can just as well type the question into the chat.
Made to stay out of the way
Red is used for one thing only: the letter your eye should land on, with two thin ticks marking it. Everything else is quiet — play, a step back by a sentence, speed from 100 to 1,000 words a minute, text size, and a thin progress line you can drag. It follows Claude's light or dark theme and the language of the chat, fits a narrow phone-sized window, and opens full screen when you want nothing but the words.
How to get it
- In the Claude apps, open Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it EyeStill and paste
https://eyestill.com/mcp. No account or sign-in. EyeStill is also under review for Claude's directory, where it will be one click. - In Claude Code, install the plugin, which adds a
/eyestillcommand:/plugin marketplace add artemartsokolov/eyestill-plugin/plugin install eyestill@eyestill
Then try: "/eyestill Pride and Prejudice", or just ask Claude to read something with EyeStill. More details on eyestill.com/apps.
What it sends, and what it doesn't
The text you open goes only to the reader view. Claude itself gets the title and the word count, and, while you read, the passage around your position. Our server fetches the page or the book you asked for, extracts the readable text and forgets it: no account, no cookies, nothing stored about what you read. The details are in the privacy policy.
Honest limits
- PDFs, and pages that need JavaScript or a login, can't be opened — paste the text instead.
- Books come only from Project Gutenberg, so books still under copyright aren't there.
- Pacing in the chat is simpler than in our web reader: longer words, punctuation and paragraph ends get more time, but the full model — word rarity, surprise, scene changes — lives at eyestill.com/read for now. How that works.
For developers. It's an MCP server with an MCP Apps view. The text reaches the view in the result's
_meta, so a whole book never lands in the model's context; the view streams the model's answer from
partial tool input, shares the reading position with ui/update-model-context, and sends the
Explain / Recap / Quiz questions with ui/message. The plugin is at
github.com/artemartsokolov/eyestill-plugin.
